Security Workers

Security workers are often asked to remain on standby, work through breaks, or cover shifts without proper pay. Treated as "always on" instead of hourly employees with real protections under California law.

Some examples of wage violations in security work include:

  1. Unpaid on-call or standby time: If your employer restricts what you can do during standby time, like requiring you to stay nearby or respond quickly, that time is generally compensable. (Labor Code §226.7)

  2. Uniform cost violations: If your employer requires a specific uniform, its cost cannot be deducted from your pay in a way that brings you below minimum wage. (IWC Wage Order, Section 9)

  3. Missed meal and rest breaks: Coverage requirements don't excuse an employer from providing required breaks.

  4. Off-the-clock check-in/check-out procedures: Mandatory check-in, briefing, or equipment procedures before or after a shift may count as compensable work time.

  5. Independent contractor misclassification: If your schedule and duties are controlled by the company you work for, you may be misclassified as a contractor when you're legally an employee.
