Warehouse & Distribution Workers

California warehouse and distribution workers are protected by the same wage and hour laws as any other employee. But fast-paced, high-volume environments often create violations that go unnoticed: unpaid time spent on security checks, shifts cut short without pay, or breaks skipped to keep up with quotas.

Some examples of wage violations in warehouse and logistics work include:

  1. Unpaid bag or security checks: If you're required to go through a bag check or security screening at the end of your shift, that time is compensable. It cannot be treated as off-the-clock. (Labor Code §1194)

  2. Reporting time pay violations: If you're scheduled for a shift and sent home early, you may still be owed at least half your scheduled shift, with a minimum of two hours. (IWC Wage Order, Section 5)

  3. Missed meal and rest breaks under quota pressure: Being pushed to meet productivity quotas doesn't excuse an employer from providing required meal and rest breaks.

  4. Off-the-clock prep or shutdown tasks: If you're asked to prep your station, log in to equipment, or complete cleanup tasks before clocking in or after clocking out, that time may still count as hours worked.

  5. Independent contractor misclassification: If your schedule, tasks, and work conditions are controlled by the company, you may be misclassified as a contractor when you're legally an employee.
